Berlin - Then and Now
There is no other large european city where you can find the history so close as in Berlin. In 1989 it was standing there still; that large big wall was heavily guarded, and it was almost impossible to go escape from East to West. In total 200 people died, trying to escape from East to West Berlin. Now it almost seems that this has never happened. Very modern buildings, impressive architecture, expensive shopping streets, great nightlife, Berlin has it all. But it is fascinating how it has been, not so long ago. Therefore, a visit to Checkpoint Charlie is a must. The clearest evidence that things have changed forever and for the best, is the Jewish museum.
Going out in Berlin
And then it is time to go out. Where the former German nightclubs were already famous -think Marlene Dietrich-, now it is even better. From large discotheques, like The Matrix with loungepool till styllish bars and restaurants in Schöneberg. More excentric (gay)places you will find around Fuggerstrasse and thé hotspot of Mitte: Monsieur Vuong, for a brilliant thai dish, surrounded by the hot and wanted of Berlin. In Mitte you can go out 24 hours a day, and that explains why the Loveparade was organized in Berlin until 2006.
Have lunch on the roof of the Reichstag
A restaurant where you must have been, Kaefer’s, is located on the roof of the Reichstag. If you make a reservation by phone + 49 (0)30/226 29 935, you will get a reservation number that you can show at the entrance of the building of the Reichstag. Avoid the queue and leave those 400 people waiting far behind..
‘Aufs fahrrad’ through Berlin
Berlin is large. And riding a bicycle is a great way to move around. It’s a great idea to rent a bike for a day or two. This way you just get there a bit quicker, it is healthy, you’ll see more of Berlin and you’ll feel more connected with the city. Take a ride to the typical Berlin courts and with good weather definetely go for a picnic in Tiergarten or on the lawn opposite the Reichstag. Feel like going to the beach? There is a great city beach on the opposite of train station Berlin Alexanderplatz.
