About the city Barcelona

ABOUT BARCELONA
- Eixample

This heartland of the modernist movement is the first port of call for Gaudi fans with its masterpiece Sagrada Familia and the famous Gaudi-houses of Barcelona: Casa Mila and Batllo. Besides that this Eixample area houses Passeig de Gracia, the famous street for serious shopping.

The Barcelona area Eixample is to be considered one of the first examples of modern urban planning. Barcelona´s Eixample (meaning, literally ´extension´ in the Catalan language) was developed in the second half of the 19th century. This Barcelona neighbourhood is designed by Ildefons Cerda and he hoped that it would be a district outside the centre of Barcelona that would accommodate people of all sorts and would contain all they needed for their daily lives, including markets, schools, hospitals and much more.

The area Eixample in Barcelona is divided into 2 districts:
- Eixample Esquerra (at the left of Passeig de Gracia)
- Eixample Dreta (at the right of Passeig de Gracia)

Eixample Esquerra (Eixample left)
Centrally located, this area of Barcelona provides easy access to Plaça Catalunya, the most busiest square in the centre of Barcelona, the famous Ramblas and its own cultural hot-spots. In this Barcelona area you find the Passeig de Gracia, famous for its luxury fashion and lifestyle shops, patterned pavement and sculptured streetlamps. Also the Sants Station is located in this Barcelona neighbourhood.

Eixample Dreta (Eixample right)
Eixample Dreta connects Plaça Catalunya, the historical Gothic Area and the centre of Barcelona. This area of Barcelona is a wonderland of modernist icons, including Gaudi´s cathedral, Sagrada Familia and his surreal buildings Casa Batllo and Casa Mila.

In Eixample Right there are many boutiques specialised in modern art and interior design, with many bars and good restaurants.

Touristic hotspots in the Eixample district
Below an overview of the most well-known hotspots in Eixample in Barcelona:

Sagrada Familia - Eixample
The ´Gaudi Cathedral´ has become the architectural icon of Barcelona, despite the fact that it is unfinished a century on. It´s predicted that it will be bristling with cranes for at least another 50 years. The Sagrada Familia is planned to be finished in 2027 to mark the 100 Year anniversary of the death of Gaudi. The Sagrada Familia is probably the most important of Antonio Gaudís works. Unfortunately, the architect was fatally hit by a tram while surveying his masterpiece.
Take the lift to one of the 18 towers to admire the blobby spires, wander through the crypt containing Gaudi´s tomb and his upside down mirrored maquettes, then step outside.

Casa Mila - Eixample
The Gaudi house Casa Mila is nicknamed La Pedrera (which means “The Stone Quarry”) and was completed in 1910. It was Gaudi´s last project before he secludes himself at the Sagrada Familia.
Casa Mila looks like an imposing grand rock in the centre of Barcelona, but it is not all it seems. Gaudi devised a new way of saving on materials and substituted load-bearing walls for a system of beams and columns. Even the façade, which looks suitably monumental in appearance, is actually made of thin aluminium plates.

The famous wave-like façade has its match inside the building, where right angles are unknown and where, in typically Gaudi style, the whole appearance is in an organic form. In reality, Gaudi thought out everything down to the last millimetre in detail.

Casa Batllo - Eixample
One of Gaudí´s most distinctive houses. Even within this´manzana de la discordia´ (which means such as “piece of discord”), so called because of it´s violent clash of architectural styles, the building´s extraordinary façade stands out. However, you´ll probably be even more taken aback by the surreal, undulating interiors. Highlights of Casa Batllo include the main drawing room, the private courtyard and the tile-clad roof, which is said to represent the dragon slain by Catalonia´s petron saint, San Jordi.

Shopping - Eixample
Shop 'til you drop. Whether you're looking for local or international brands, Passeig de Gracia has it all. The absolute shopping-paradise is the Passeig de Gracia itself, but don’t forget about the surroundings towards Eixample Esquerra, for example the Rambla de Catalunya, which is located parallel at left from Passeig de Gracia, but also streets such as Carrer de Valencia and Carre de Mallorca.

Foreign brands, such as Ermenegildo Zegna, Max Mara, Escada, and Armand Bassi stand beside Spanish ones such as Purificación García, Groc and specialist in leather Loewe. The exclusivity of Vogue, Bally and Yanko are offset by more accessible shops like Zara, Mango, Globe, Benetton and Laura Ashley. This street also boasts many restaurants and outdoor cafés, bookshops and jewellers.
